FAQs: Closet Works is Your Premier Closet Organizer Company

You can begin by filling out our appointment request form, and someone will contact you shortly to set up your very own in-home consultation. There is no charge for the consultation. If you just can't wait and want to begin visualizing your closet now, you can visit our hardware and accessories and make some choices on colors and styles so that you're ready when your designer arrives!
Our installation team is fully licensed and insured. We never use sub-contractors, and we have the utmost confidence in our installation team.
Closet Works was founded in 1987 and has been doing closets for over 35 years. We are a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Container Store. See the "About Us" page for details.
Closet Works stands behind its products and workmanship with a stronger guarantee than any other closet organizer company in the USA. We offer a limited lifetime warranty on all products we manufacture and install. We also offer an unequalled design guarantee that allows you to make adjustments to existing shelving and hanging configurations for up to 90 days after installation at no charge. We have over 35 years of experience designing closets in the Chicago area, and we're still going strong. Our employees love what they do and can't wait to share the gift of organization with you.
If you are considering installing closets yourself, it is important that you keep in mind the cost of purchasing the product, hauling components home and installing the product. Your time is valuable, and often the money that you saved to do-it-yourself is generally not nearly enough to justify your frustrations. If you measure incorrectly, you are generally stuck with something you may not be able to use. Closet Works handles the entire project for you — from measuring and design, to manufacturing and professional installation. Our products and installations are guaranteed. Additionally, we only use 3/4" thick furniture grade materials on our closets. Many home improvement stores sell the lower cost 1/2" thick materials which can more easily warp.
For those determined to design and/or install their own closet system, we recommend Elfa systems from the Container Store.
Many of our closet systems do include doors for the individual sections, but we do not sell a large door for the outside of your closet. If you are seeking this type of service, we have companies that we will happily recommend to you.
We serve the entire Chicago metro area, including Southeastern Wisconsin, Harbor Country Michigan, and Northwestern Indiana. If you think you may not be included in our service area, just give us a call and we will let you know. If you are outside of the Chicago metro area, simply go to your closest Container Store and purchase a Preston® closet. Closet Works products are sold at every Container Store under the Preston® name.
Absolutely — we stand behind our work! Closet Works offers a limited lifetime warranty on the products we manufacture and install. We also offer an unprecedented design guarantee that allows Closet Works customers to make minor design changes for up to 90 days after your installation at no charge.
Closet Works manufactures all of our own closet and organization systems locally at our headquarters in Elmhurst Illinois. Each system is custom made-to-order at our 60,000 square foot state-of-the-art production facility, meeting the individual clients' needs and design specifications. We use only the highest quality materials. Our systems are made in the USA by Closet Works employees and are never subcontracted. However, closet accessories — like valet poles, cabinet handles, knobs or doors, are an exception. We are distributors of those products and source them from high quality vendors located throughout the US.
Closet Works is in the business of all types of custom organization systems. We are industry innovators, able to design and build any type of custom built-in that you need. In addition to closets, our typical offerings include pantries, wine rooms, wall units/book cases, entertainment centers, Murphy type wall bed systems with desk and closet surround, custom beds with built-in drawers, home office systems, fireplace surrounds, craft or art rooms, bathroom storage, garage and laundry room cabinetry, mudroom and hall tree organization systems, commercial storage and cabinetry for medical and dental facilities, retail business cabinetry and more! We also design and manufacture the patented 360 Organizer® — the original (and best) rotating closet system that can maximize your space for a full 360 degrees of storage, eliminating the dead corners!
Our closets typically start for as little as $1,000 — but elaborate installations can range upwards of $40,000 depending on size, options and finishes. The average person spends around $4,000. However, every closet or home organization system from Closet Works is available in multiple price points to fit any budget. Closet Works pricing is determined by size, complexity, installation type, materials used, door or drawer styles, hardware choices, finishes, colors, accessories or any other options selected by the buyer. The best way to ensure your proposal meets your budget is to talk with your designer about your needs. Learn More About Custom Closet Pricing >
Every closet manufactured by Closet Works is a custom product — made-to-order to fit your home and your home only. It is not something that we can simply put back into inventory. Therefore, any custom item or manufactured items are nonrefundable. However, we do allow Closet Works customers to make minor design changes for up to 90 days after your installation at no charge, ensuring that your newly purchased closet/organization system works for you and your lifestyle.
Your closet installation must remain intact in its original location in order for your warranty to remain in effect. If you need to take down and then reassemble your closet or other Closet Works organization system due to remodeling or other concerns, Closet Works will continue to warranty the system only if our installation team handles both the deinstall and reinstall of the system.
